Huntsman is seeking a Process Development Chemist/Engineer supporting the Advanced Materials Division located in McIntosh, Alabama. This position will report to the Process Development Manager.

Job Scope

The Process Development Chemist/Engineer (Thermal Scientist) is in charge of independently managing Process Development mandates (short term sub-projects or longer-term business projects/programs) in order to support New Product Introduction (NPI), Manufacturing improvement initiatives and process safety incidents with the consideration of PSM/EHS knowledge requirement. The position requires management of the accountabilities and share the knowledge/experience/practice across the global process development organization. Having knowledge or experience on thermal safety instruments like DSC, RC1, ARC and TAM will be an added advantage.

As the Process Development Chemist/Engineer you will:

Demonstrate PASSION for the Safe, Efficient, & Ethical manufacture of High-Quality Materials that are Valued by our Customers.

With minimal supervision and high level of decision-making:

EHS/PSM

* Work toward a zero harms objective

* Ensure day to day work is carried out in a safe manner and all near misses, incidents and accidents are reported/Investigated.

* Implement EHS/PSM procedure (e.g., MOC, JSA, RA, etc..), and support site HAZOP studies.

NPI

* Implement new product introduction, including feasibility study, define and develop process parameters with PSM/EHS review and procedure, cost evaluation/estimation, technical package preparation, etc.

* Support the business portfolio by a rapid and efficient scale up from lab to production.

Mandate Management

* Evaluate feasibility of mandates. Define and agree on goal, milestones, and resource needs with requester.

* Execute mandates using state of the art tools and methodologies to deliver safe, practical, economic solutions with no adverse environmental effect. Drive action plan with respect of deadline and available resource (internal, analytics, external upon request).

* Innovates by developing new tools and methodologies for mandate execution.

* Propose solutions to improve productivity, EHS, PSM, quality and reliability.

* Act as process owner in projects taking results into production. Work as team member at process/product introduction.

* Manage knowledge / reporting with respect of quality standards.

* Be a valuable point of contact for our internal customers like PM's, Marketing, Technology & Innovation, Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering

Lab Management (Optional)

* Manage the team of lab technicians (allocate resource to other process chemist, carry out PDP's) and coach pilot operators: EHS, leadership, source of motivation for personal and professional development, team building to promote the collaboration between associates and partners.

- EHS: apply Golden Rules / daily presence in Pilot Plant / apply EHS standards (5S, MOC, JSA, PSM, root cause analysis)

* Manage budget and assets / CER's.

Pilot Plant Management (Optional)

* Manage the pilot resource "3M" - (manpower, machines & materials, carry out PDP's) in order to reach QOTIF criteria and respecting EHS and Quality standards.

- EHS: apply Golden Rules / daily presence in Pilot Plant / apply EHS standards (5S, MOC, JSA, PSM, root cause analysis)

- Take part to the S&OP process.

- Manage short process descriptions and recipes in SAP.

- Reduce waste production and utility consumption

* Manage direct reports and coach pilot operators and lab technicians: leadership, source of motivation for personal and professional development, team building to promote the collaboration between associates and partners.

Thermal Safety Lab Management

* Support and ultimately lead the thermal Safety Lab and its resources (Material, Installation). Ensure reports are delivered in timely manner.

* Coach lab technicians: leadership, source of motivation for personal and professional development, team building to promote the collaboration between associates and partners.

* Participate to external conferences relating thermal safety experiences sharing, methodology and latest innovations.

* Ensure reliable measurements through monitoring, calibration and round robin participations with external partners.

Required Qualifications:

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

  • B.S/BSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or relevant discipline.
  • Minimum 2-3 years in a laboratory, production, or process development area, preferably in a multinational (industrial) company.
  • This position may require some involvement with materials regulated under the Resource conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). This involvement may require an understanding of applicable rules and procedures associated with RCRA wastes. A combination of training methods, e.g., Computer-based Training, Classroom, and/or On-the-job training, will be provided prior to any such involvement with RCRA regulated wastes.
  • Recognized knowledge of chemical processes at international level.
  • Knowledge in organic chemistry, polymeric chemistry, and epoxy chemistry.
  • Knowledge in chemical engineering and understanding of chemical production process.
  • Knowledge or experience on thermal safety instruments like DSC, RC1, ARC and TAM will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of production application and business aspects in several segments.
  • Knowledge in analytical methodology and proficient with statistic principles.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office 365 Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Fluent local site language and in English.
  • Project Management Skill
