Technical Training Manager

The Technical Training Manager leads a team of instructional designers responsible for the development of operations focused training content and programs, as well as materials to support other enterprise strategic initiatives. Drives all aspects of the assigned programs, including planning, organizing, communicating, and managing program activities. Partners and effectively engages with enterprise and divisional leadership as well as front-line operations team members to drive programs in support of the Vulcan Way of Operations to support strong safety and environmental performance, improve operational KPI's, support operations employee development, and improve yield. Ensures project completion according to timeline, budget, and specifications.

Stakeholder Engagement: Skills in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, and in particular our front-line operations managers and hourly employees. Ability to influence and gain support for training and change initiatives.

Project Manager/Leader: Strong project management skills to plan, execute, and monitor change initiatives within established timelines and budgets, as well as leadership skills to drive strong engagement and performance.

Strategic Thinker and Thought Partner: Capability to align change efforts with overall organizational strategy and objectives. Insightful analysis of the impact of changes on business outcomes. Leverage knowledge and ways of thinking to drive provoking discussions to navigate complex challenges and lead to innovative ideas.

Change Management Agent: Strong understanding of change management principles, methodologies and best practices. Ability to develop and execute change strategies that drive successful organizational transformations.

Influencer: Ability to have a positive impact on others, to persuade, convince, and gain support and buy-in from key stakeholders.

Organizational Culture Supporter: Understanding of organizational culture dynamics and how they impact change efforts, particularly with our front-line operations teams. Ability to promote cultural alignment and shift when necessary.

Collaborator: Building organizational partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives and effect continuous improvement.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage the Technical and Operations Training program track(s) within the Organizational and Development department;
  • Partners with key internal stakeholders and various organizational leaders to understand business, performance, and skills needs; identifies root causes for gaps and implements solutions that successfully improve organizational performance within our operations;
  • Assesses operational organizational needs to determine the overall direction of projects and initiatives as well as priorities within assigned program track(s);
  • Supports all aspects of the coordination and administration of assigned programs, including planning, organizing, communicating, and managing program activities;
  • Works with key stakeholders and various organizational leaders to identify and validate requirements and develop project plan and timeline plan considering available resources (people and technology). Ensures deliverables are effectively managed and completed in the agreed upon timeframe;
  • Articulates the change, identifies stakeholders, assesses the impact, and communicates to the organization. Proactively identifies potential people risks and anticipates resistance; developing specific plans to mitigate or address concerns;
  • Develop an actionable and targeted organizational alignment plan for projects which includes communication, stakeholder assessment, and impact assessment. Support the organizational readiness and project execution of plans by managers and business leaders. Identify, manage, and resolve resistance and performance gaps, and work to develop and implement corrective actions;
  • Creates and manages measurement systems to track adoption, utilization, and proficiency of changes, reporting metrics as required;
  • Ensures project completion according to the timeline, budget, and specifications;
  • Provide regular communication updates to leadership, including project status, challenges, opportunities, and risks. Identify, communicate, and resolve issues in a timely manner;
  • Effectively leads a team of instructional designers. Recruits, selects, onboards, develops and drive team performance and development;
  • Evaluate performance and provide ongoing and frequent coaching and feedback to team members. Conducts quarterly Performance Dialogues and development conversations. Manages the annual merit planning process for direct reports.

Qualifications

What You'll Need:

  • BS Degree is required. An advanced degree in Human Resources or a related field (e.g., Organizational Development, Instructional Design, Industrial/Organizational Psychology) is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of instructional design, organizational development, training, HR, or relevant experience is required. Previous project management experience is a plus.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience is desired.
  • Previous training development experience supporting operations teams. Industrial or manufacturing experience is preferred;
  • Experience with instructions design tools like Articulate 360
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and the ability to evaluate current processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Possess strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Prioritize and handle simultaneous projects under tight time pressures
  • Work independently and think strategically with the management team.
  • Champion and drive team success while maintaining an enterprise-level perspective
  • Plan and manage effectively using motivation and team-building skills
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of project management principles and planning
  • Identify potential "value add" opportunities and communicate those opportunities effectively at all levels of management.
  • Models the "Vulcan Leadership Model"
  • Asks a series of probing questions to go beyond surface issues and fully understand the components of a problem and its root causes.
  • Stays abreast of the latest technology and industry/functional area best practices
  • Requires use of computerized equipment and technology.
  • Ability to work in a stressful, deadline-oriented environment that requires complex, technical information and decision-making. Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
