Job Description

IS4S is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer with expertise in Pulse Power Systems design, packaging and testing specifically High-Power Microwave (HPM) and Large Capacitive Discharge (CDU) Systems. In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of large-scale pulsed power systems, including capacitive discharge systems and components, High voltage switches, control systems, and ancillary hardware. Your primary focus will be on the design, analysis, and integration of mechanical aspects to support the development of pulse power systems for various applications, promoting innovative solutions. Position Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer for Electromagnetic Systems Team
Location: Alabama
Clearance:  Ability to Obtain a Secret clearance required.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Utilize your expertise in mechanical engineering to perform, system design and packaging, comprehensive analysis, including finite element analysis (FEA), for static and transient conditions, ensuring the optimal performance of large capacitive pulse power systems.
  • Conduct materials compatibility analyses to select suitable materials for components exposed to harsh operating environments, ensuring reliability and durability.
  • Obtain necessary certifications for pressure and vacuum vessels/components, adhering to industry standards and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components into the overall system design.
  • Lead the mechanical design efforts from concept through Preliminary and Final Designs, and acceptance testing (live fire range testing required) ensuring all project requirements are met within established timelines.
  • Provide technical support for hardware procurement, interface with vendors, machine shops overseeing the acquisition and assembly of components essential for large capacitive pulse power machines.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary team members to assemble and test all hardware and ensure successful integration of mechanical components.
  • Participate in system shake-down, live fire testing phases, offering your expertise to validate the performance and reliability of large capacitive pulse power systems.
  • Provide ongoing support for the operation and maintenance of these systems, troubleshooting and optimizing performance as needed.
  • Collaborate on concept studies exploring the utilization of Pulse Power technologies in various sustainable applications.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, emphasizing Pulse Power Systems design, and testing.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a related field with pulse power background
  • Proven experience and expertise in HPM and large CDU power systems, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of their design and operation.
  • Strong proficiency in performing mechanical and thermal analysis, with a focus on FEA for static and transient conditions.
  • Familiarity with materials compatibility assessments, especially when dealing with harsh operating environments.
  • Knowledge of pressure vessel and vacuum vessel certifications, adhering to relevant code standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts clearly.
  • Previous experience in large-scale pulsed power projects and interdisciplinary work will be highly advantageous.
  • Experience testing High Voltage systems
  • A passion for learning and a proactive approach to assimilating knowledge from experienced team members.
