Documentation Specialist

Hill Crest Behavioral Health is an acute care, 194 bed inpatient psychiatric facility located in Birmingham, AL, providing mental health services for adolescents and adults.

Qualifications

Functions as backup inpatient coder, appropriatley coding inpatient medical records ytilizing DSM-V and ICD-10-CM coding systems for claims processing. Responsible for re-analysis, update and competion of medical documentation by clinicians according to the Joint Commission, CMS and other regulatory guidelines. Responsible for weekly delinquency count for physicians ans other clinicians.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High School graduate or GED
  • Graduate of an accredited Health Informaton Management program preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of ICD-10-CM and DSM-V coding principles and guidelines
  • Minimum of two years inpatient coding experience to include behavioral health required.
  • RHIA, RHIT credential, and/or CCS (Certified coding specialist) certification accepted in lieu of ecperience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and disease processes.
  • Minimum one year experience performing related medical records processes preferred.
  • knowledge of federal, state and payer specific regulations, policies and compliance standards pertaining to documentation, coding and billing.
  • Functions as backup inpatient coder as workload necessitates or primary coder is unavailable
  • Logs discharges in discharge book

Physical demands

  • Ability to work long hours

  • Ability to remain continuously alert and focused
  • Ability to wirte
  • Ability to effectively communicate
  • Ability to see (suffucuent to read charts and instrustions, handwritten and typewritten material)
  • Ability to detect potential or actual safety hazards (sufficient to detect smoke, chemicals or other environmental threats)
  • Ability to squat, stoop, and bend downward and forward by bending spine at the waist
  • Ability to reach above head level and lift and hold approximately 15 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to move approximately 50 pounds
  • Ability to perform physical aspects of CPR
